Valentino Rossi was left bitterly disappointed after a first lap crash in the A-Style TT Assen.
Valentino Rossi, for all his undoubted talents, has never been the best of starters in MotoGP races. Identifying this as an area for improvement, and with the prospect of Assen poleman Casey Stoner making a breakaway at the head of the race, the Fiat Yamaha rider was going all-out in the Netherlands.
Unfortunately for the five-time World Champion, the gamble didn´t quite pay off, as on the opening lap he came unstuck due to a combination of over-exuberance a cold tyre and the tricky first left hander of the race.
`Unfortunately I made a mistake on the first lap, on the first left corner,´ admitted Rossi frankly after the A-Style TT Assen. `I went in too fast with a cold tyre and lost the rear.´
The Italian remounted his M1 and fought his way back to eleventh place after overtaking Marco Melandri and Toni Elias, but the rider taken out in his first lap fall was unable to do so. Rossi extended his apologies to LCR Honda´s Randy de Puniet, holding up his hand for the collision between the two.
`I took De Puniet with me when I crashed, so I have to say sorry to him. It was a bad mistake, because today we improved the setting of the bike and had great pace, and could even have challenged for the win,´ lamented the rider, having conceded the lead in the World Championship to Dani Pedrosa.
`It was an important mistake for the championship, but we are on the pace, we are fast and the championship is very long. One mistake in a year is possible after seven races on the podium.´

Assen - Drama terjadi di Assen seiring dengan kemenangan Casey Stoner yang menjaga posisi satu sejak start. Valentino Rossi hanya finis di posisi 11, sehingga Dani Pedrosa pun merebut tampuk teratas klasemen sementara.
Di awal balapan, Rossi menabrak Randy de Puniet sehingga harus kehilangan posisi. Meski berusaha keras, dia hanya bisa finis di posisi 11.
Sementara itu Stoner kembali melanjutkan tren kemenangan setelah sebelumnya digdaya di Donnington. Kali ini dia tampil apik di GP Belanda untuk menjaga persaingan gelar juara dunia.
Pedrosa yang start di posisi dua sukses menjaga posisinya di tempat kedua. Dengan tambahan 20 poin dia kini memimpin klasemen dengan 171 poin. Rossi ada di posisi kedua dengan 167 angka sedangkan Stoner di tempat ketiga dengan 142 poin

Toni Elias bermasalah dari start, dia melongok-longok bagian belakang motornya. Tabrakan terjadi! Randy De Puniet ditabrak Valentino Rossi dan keduanya terjatuh!
Alex de Angelis juga terjatuh tak lama kemudian! Kelihatannya cukup parah karena dia langsung memegangi tangannya. Kecelakaan ini tak melibatkan pembalap lainnya.
Casey Stoner sementara itu sudah dilalui Daniel Pedrosa, kendati Stoner bisa memimpin kembali sesaat sebelum memasuki lap kedua. Rossi tampaknya bisa kembali ke lintasan meski tercecer di belakang. Nicky Hayden bisa memanfaatkan itu dan untuk sementara mengisi posisi ketiga. Benar-benar dramatis saat balapan baru tuntas melintasi putaran pertama!
Stoner, Pedrosa, Hayden, Shinya Nakano dan Andrea Dovizioso mengisi posisi lima terdepan dengan balapan masih tersisa 22 lap. Stoner memimpin dengan cukup nyaman. Ow, Dovizioso lantas bisa mendahului Nakano untuk menempati posisi empat di lap ini.
Dengan masih 20 lap tersisa, Stoner masih jauh di depan dengan keunggulan tiga menit 471 detik dari Pedrosa yang ada di posisi dua. Rossi sementara itu masih tercecer di posisi empat dan Nakano kembali dilalui, kali ini oleh Chris Vermeulen, yang juga melewati Dovizioso. Dari posisi start delapan, Vermeulen kini ada di tempat keempat. Ohh, Anthony West terpeleset dan terlempar keluar lintasan! Dia kelihatannya tak apa-apa walau sangat kesal.
Stoner makin menjauh dari pengejarnya. Dengan 16 lap tersisa, dia menambah jaraknya jadi empat menit 250 detik dari Pedrosa. Kejayaan Stoner yang mengamankan podium satu setelah mendulang pole di Donnington bisa terulang lagi!
Pada lap 12 dari total 26, di mana Rossi? Tampaknya dia masih berjuang dari posisi terbelakang, posisi 13. Jaraknya cukup jauh dari Marco Melandri yang ada di depannya, yaitu delapan menit 745 detik.

Assen - Casey Stoner tampaknya tengah bangkit dari keterpurukan. Setelah menjuarai GP Inggris, penggeber Ducati itu tampil sebagai yang tercepat di kualifikasi GP Belanda.
Di sirkuit Assen, Jumat (27/6/2008), Stoner menorehkan waktu tercepat 1 menit 35,520 detik untuk satu lapnya. Hasil ini membuat pembalap Australia itu akan start dari posisi satu dalam lomba besok (28/6).
Menyusul di posisi tercepat kedua adalah Dani Pedrosa. Pembalap Spanyol yang menggunakan motor Honda itu mencatat waktu tercepat 1 menit 35,552 detik dan berhak start di belakang Stoner.
Sementara pemimpin klasemen sementara pembalap, Valentino Rossi, berhasil merengkuh posisi start ketiga. Rossi sukses menggeber Yamahanya dan mencetak waktu tercepat 1 menit 35,659 detik.
Pada sesi kualifikasi ini, kecelakaan cukup parah menimpa pembalap Kawasaki John Hopkins. Saat kualifikasi tinggal tersisa dua menit, motor pembalap Amerika ini menabrak tembok pembatas.
Kondisi Hopkins hingga kini belum diketahui. Menurut Eurosport, Hopkins tidak terlihat bergerak saat dibawa oleh tim medis.

Yamaha hail Valentino Rossi’s double century

Yamaha bosses have hailed Italian Valentino Rossi after he made his 200th world championship appearance in last weekend’s British GP.
Valentino Rossi heads into this weekend’s Dutch GP at Assen holding an 11-point lead over closest rival Dani Pedrosa, startng his third century of races in Holland in confident mood having claimed seven successive podium finishes on the his Fiat Yamaha.
Yamaha boss Davide Brivio though reckons it is the longevity of Rossi’s career that will make him stand out as one of the greatest riders in history.
Brivio told MCN: “Apart from the first races of 1996 when he was a rookie in 125s they were 200 races where he was always at the top and this is amazing. He always started a race with the possiiblty to win so that’s amazing to have such a long career always at the top.
"Some riders get to 200 races but maybe with up and down results. Valentino is almost close to 50 per of wins. To win nearly 50 per cent of the races you enter over such a long time is amazing.”

As the riders take to the track for their final free practice sessions on Friday morning at the A-Style TT Assen they have wind and a wet riding surface to contend with.
Although dryer weather is forecast for the afternoon qualifying sessions at Assen on Friday the early practice runs will provide yet another test for the teams in all three classes as they send their riders out prepared for wet riding in Northern Holland.
With so many rain-affected days at the various European rounds thus far in 2008 the World Championship competitors and their mechanics will be well-accustomed to switches between dry and wet set-ups, but as ever the changeable conditions will make for some tricky decisions, particularly on tyre choice, as Friday progresses.
For riders such as Toni Elias, who has suffered horror crashes on his last two visits to Assen, those already carrying injuries such as Jorge Lorenzo and John Hopkins and their less experienced counterparts in the smaller classes, they will be hoping to avoid any major accidents on the slippery track – having seen Loris Capirossi ruled out of the TT following a crash in the dry on Thursday.
In addition to the qualifying sessions for the three World Championship classes in the afternoon the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup riders will also be on-track contesting the grid positions for their seventh race of the year, which will take place on Saturday.
As the riders take to the track for their final free practice sessions on Friday morning at the A-Style TT Assen they have wind and a wet riding surface to contend with.

With so many rain-affected days at the various European rounds thus far in 2008 the World Championship competitors and their mechanics will be well-accustomed to switches between dry and wet set-ups, but as ever the changeable conditions will make for some tricky decisions, particularly on tyre choice, as Friday progresses.
For riders such as Toni Elias, who has suffered horror crashes on his last two visits to Assen, those already carrying injuries such as Jorge Lorenzo and John Hopkins and their less experienced counterparts in the smaller classes, they will be hoping to avoid any major accidents on the slippery track – having seen Loris Capirossi ruled out of the TT following a crash in the dry on Thursday.
In addition to the qualifying sessions for the three World Championship classes in the afternoon the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup riders will also be on-track contesting the grid positions for their seventh race of the year, which will take place on Saturday.
